To-Be-long-ing

To Be Longing is an intimate, long-term project built around a mixed family and a life lived between Colombia and Latvia. Over more than twelve years, the work gathers images made across both places, tracing everyday moments, travels, and encounters as a way of understanding belonging not as a fixed identity, but as something that shifts over time and across generations.
Developed through photography, the project explores how notions of home, nation, and “one’s people” begin to blur within transnational families. As languages, customs, and landscapes overlap, belonging becomes less tied to a single place and more to relationships, memory, and shared experience. To Be Longing observes this gradual blending; sometimes tender, sometimes disorienting; where belonging is no longer something one possesses, but something continually negotiated.

To Be Longing es un proyecto íntimo y de largo aliento construido alrededor de una familia binacional y de una vida compartida entre Colombia y Letonia. A lo largo de más de doce años, el proyecto reúne imágenes realizadas en ambos lugares, registrando escenas cotidianas, viajes y encuentros como una forma de pensar el pertenecer no como una identidad fija, sino como algo que se transforma con el tiempo y entre generaciones.
Desarrollado a través de fotografía, el proyecto indaga en cómo las nociones de hogar, nación y “los tuyos” comienzan a diluirse dentro de las familias transnacionales. A medida que lenguas, costumbres y paisajes se superponen, el pertenecer deja de estar anclado a un solo lugar y se desplaza hacia las relaciones, la memoria y la experiencia compartida. To Be Longing observa ese proceso de mezcla; por momentos afectivo, por momentos desorientador; en el que el pertenecer ya no se posee, sino que se negocia constantemente.

As we ask ourselves what it means to belong and set out in search of possible answers, we find ourselves between train cars moving through geographic and territorial landscapes, through roots and inheritance. We see family, recent friends, distant ones, and even schoolmates. The journey is so long that it may pass through forbidden or hidden places, a distant or already forgotten sense of belonging. Some believe we belong only to our mother tongue, that language is our sole refuge of belonging; we cling to it out of fear of losing our intimate, fluid dialogue with thought. Belonging is a complex idea in a world where borders resemble a drawing by William Kentridge.
Fortunate or unfortunate are those born in foreign lands with two or more mother tongues, those who have lost the notion of home and still do not have books; or only have them digitally; to feel that the place where they are stored is the place they call “home.”

Al hacernos la pregunta sobre el pertenecer y partir de viaje hacia la búsqueda de posibles respuestas, nos vemos entre vagones que cruzan los paisajes geográficos, territoriales, de raíces y herencia. Vemos la familia, los amigos recientes, los lejanos e incluso los colegiales. Es un trayecto tan largo que podría visitar lugares prohibidos o escondidos, un pertenecer remoto o ya olvidado.
Algunos creen que solo pertenecemos a nuestra lengua materna y que es el lenguaje nuestro único refugio de pertenencia, nos aferramos a él con el temor de perder nuestro diálogo íntimo y fluido con el pensamiento. Pertenecer es un concepto complejo en un mundo donde las fronteras parecen un dibujo de William Kentridge.
Afortunados o desafortunados aquellos quienes nacieron en tierra extranjera con dos o más lenguas maternas, aquellos quienes han perdido la noción de hogar y todavía no tienen libros (o los tienen digitales) para sentir que es allí, donde están almacenados, el lugar al que llaman "hogar."
